Root canal treatment
Treating the inside of the tooth to stop the pain and keep the tooth.
What it is
When the inside of a tooth (the "nerve") becomes inflamed or infected, root canal treatment deals with it and lets you keep the tooth. A root-treated tooth still works for chewing. Before taking a tooth out, it is always worth trying to save it.
How it works
- 1
Diagnosis
Examination and X-ray to confirm the cause of the pain.
- 2
Treatment
Under local anaesthetic, we clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth.
- 3
Sealing
The tooth is sealed so it does not become infected again.
- 4
Rebuilding
A filling or crown protects the tooth from breaking.
Frequently asked questions
Will it hurt?
The treatment is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards you may feel some discomfort for a few days.
Isn't it simpler to take the tooth out?
It is quicker, but you lose the tooth for good. If it can be saved, keeping it is almost always worth it.
How many appointments does it take?
It depends on the tooth and the infection. It can be one appointment or more. We will tell you at the assessment.
This information does not replace an appointment. Results vary from person to person and depend on the dentist's assessment.
